Posted on March 11, 2020
With a four-door design, plenty of space, and incredible off-road capabilities, the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon has an interior and exterior designed to make it an all-around tremendous vehicle. It was created with active people in mind, making it the ultimate weekend excursion machine for playing in nature. At the same time, plenty of standard comforts make it more than sufficient for everyday driving in the city.
As the top-of-the-line model, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon comes with quite a few features not available for other versions of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. For those who don't know, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon name is one that's widely respected, and for good reason. It represents the best trail vehicle the brand makes, making it the pinnacle of hardcore off-road vehicles.
For this 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon review, several highlights of the off-roader will be touched on. The only true way to understand what makes the vehicle so special is to try it out for yourself.
Mechanical
The 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon doesn't just look and feel tough; the mechanical components are made for rigorous use. Drivers can take on some seriously challenging terrain with ease, giving you the confidence to go places that seemed out of reach before.
At the heart of the vehicle is an efficient and powerful 3.6-litre Pentastar V-6 with variable valve timing. It puts out a maximum 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, so you can get through mud, sand, snow and whatever else nature has in store. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a five-speed automatic is available. It works with a Rock-Trac four-wheel-drive system, which is unique to the Rubicon model. The Tru-Lok front and rear axle helps ensure the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon can get through some truly difficult areas.
Just as important as the engine is the performance suspension. Live axles in the front and rear help with taking on any difficult landscape. Monotube high-pressure shock absorbers do an excellent job of cushioning blows from imperfections on any surface. The configuration includes an electronic front sway bar disconnect, meaning optimal cornering capability plus incredible rock-crawling abilities are accessible through a simple interior control.
Sometimes towing another vehicle or trailer is necessary. Fortunately, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon is up to the task. It has the ability to pull up to 1,588 kg of weight. The maximum payload it can handle is 405 kg, so you can take along a substantial amount of gear.
Exterior
There's no mistaking the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon for any other vehicle, on or off the road. The distinct slotted grille and round headlights, original profile and other details truly set it apart from all other options on the market.
Since the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon was designed for hardcore trail runs, it features rock rails as part of the standard package, protecting against damage to the sides of the vehicle. The premium Sunrider Soft Top makes it simple to let open air into the cabin, making for the ultimate outdoor experience.
Other functional exterior equipment for the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon includes LT255/75R17 BSW Off-Road BFGoodrich tires, which provide excellent grip for trail runs. They're wrapped around 17-inch polished aluminum wheels with a Mineral Grey painted centre for a distinct appearance unlike any other Jeep Wrangler Unlimited model. Black fender flares help complete the hardened look.
Of course, one of the most important aspects of any off-road vehicle is clearances. The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon boasts an approach angle of 42.2 degrees, a departure angle of 32.5 degrees and a breakover angle of 21.2 degrees. Ground clearance is excellent at 254 mm.
The four-door configuration and longer wheelbase of the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon makes it easier for everyone to get in and out of the vehicle with ease. Seating accommodates up to five people, with a surprising amount of cargo space behind the rear seats.
As a vehicle for real outdoor enthusiasts, the interior is easy to clean after spending time in the wilderness. Surfaces throughout can be wiped off, while removable carpets and floor drain plugs make it practical to rinse out caked-on mud.
Quite a few modern comforts are included, such as air conditioning and power windows. The media centre has a 6.5-inch touchscreen, making it easy to read and select different menu icons. Drivers use steering-wheel mounted audio and cruise controls, helping them stay in control of the vehicle at all times. An auto-dimming rearview mirror, tilt-adjustable steering column and rear cargo area cover are also included.
